Work Email Address

The Retirement Systems Division requires a personal email address so that you are able to receive important notifications, including security verifications, password and username changes, account edits or updates, and other information.

Using your work email can cause the following issues or delays:

  • If you retire or leave employment, you will not have access to retirement notifications.
  • If your place of work changes their email address, (.com to a .org or .net), you will not be able to receive notifications.
  • If your place of work has strong firewalls or doesn’t have the Retirement Systems Division listed on their safe list, you will not receive notifications.
  • If you try to change your email address but do not remember your username or password, you will not receive your security clearance information unless you have access to your email address on record.

If you are using a work email address to access ORBIT, it is important that you change it to your personal email address as soon as possible. If you find that you no longer have access to the email address used to login to your ORBIT account and need to make a change, but cannot make the change through the current security measures in place, an Affidavit of Identity will be required and is attached for your convenience. The Affidavit of Identity can be emailed to nc.retirement@nctreasurer.com with AOI in the subject line. Upon receipt, a Counselor will review, approve and change your email to the address you provide.

What you need to consider:

  • You will need a mobile phone number in your profile that accepts SMS text messages (some VOiP phones are not SMS text compatible).

  • You will need your personal email address on file. If you do not have your mobile phone, we can send the security code to your email address on file.

We have discovered that some members share an email address. For security reasons, we do not allow multiple members to register in ORBIT using the same email address. If you are unaware of anyone using your email address, please keep in mind that it does not have to be continuously used in order to be entered into our system. For example, if a friend or relative wrote the email down on a form once, or entered it into ORBIT, it would be recorded in our system. You may have also assisted a parent or child with a form, listing your own email address in the contact information. If an updated email was never subsequently provided, we would still have your email address on record for that person.

You may enter a different email into ORBIT in order to successfully register or contact us at nc.retirement@nctreasurer.com using "ORBIT HELP - Email" in the subject line.

Because each employer reports payroll differently, our system is not always able to capture the most up-to-date average final compensation information. The average final compensation is the average of your four highest paid years (48 months), based on the payroll records we receive from your employer. If you use the estimators found on the ORBIT login page, you can input your own information. which, in some cases may be more accurate than the information we have in ORBIT at the time

Once you are within a year of your retirement. a manual estimate calculation can be done. To start this process. call (919) 814-4590 or email us at nc.retirement@nctreasurer.com and request a Form 309. If you would like more information on how the calculation is done, you can look in the appropriate retirement system handbook located on myNCRetirement.com.

Remember, the estimators in ORBIT are meant to be used as a general source of information for retirements, transfer benefit and service purchase calculations.

The forms we provide online allow users to type in their information versus completing a printed copy manually. The legibility of a typed form reduces the possibility of confusion or misunderstanding, resulting in a shorter processing period and fewer errors.

All forms are in a PDF format that will open on any computer or device with a PDF Reader application. If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you will need to select the Fill & Sign tool in order to fill out the form prior to printing. In some cases, you may need to save your file to your computer or device and reopen before the edit and text tools will be available.

The best way to work with all form is to log into your ORBIT account. Accessing forms through your ORBIT account will automatically fill in your name and basic information. Whenever possible, fill out the rest of the form on your computer or device and then print a completed form. The Guides supplied with each form are for your information and each form should be signed and submitted according to the form instructions
